“Natural Perception” is the goal, theme, and title of the upcoming tour and Album. The theme refers to the spiritual power of music that emerges when musicians are in the same place without mental obstacles. Recorded in New York and Berlin, the Quintet’s music is influenced by the 60’s post–bebop era, with hints of modern classical music and singer–songwriter styles woven in. The opening track “Chord” pays tribute to the aforementioned 60’s post-bebop era with it’s swinging groove, whereas “Dark Eyes of Tomorrow” they break up the traditional jazz form and explore the realms of collective improvisation. “The Effort” is inspired by a Wayne Shorter documentary where Wayne identified the pursuit of musical perfection to be ‘the effort.’ Ingrid and Tobias play off of one another in “Native Speaker,” a classic groove tune. You can hear Ingrid Jenson experiment with a variety of synthesizers on Tobias’ arrangement of “You’re My Everything.”
Tobias Meinhart’s quintet brings together musicians of the highest caliber in New York. Tobias’ long—term mentor Ingrid Jensen joins on trumpet. She has been performing with the Maria Schneider Orchestra for over 5 years and is consistently named in the top 10 of Downbeat’s Critics polls. On piano and rhodes is Yago Vazquez. Originally from Galicia, he graduated from the New School, with honors, in 2010. He has performed with Jazzgreats such as Reggie Workman and currently holds the piano seat in Billy Harpers band. Phil Donkin, upright bass, hails from England and is one of the most sought—after bassists both in New York and Europe. He regularly performs with Kurt Rosenwinkel, Ari Hoenig, and Bill Stewart. Jessie Simpson, drummer, is a San Francisco native. Despite his young age, 25, he frequently performs with John Abercrombie and Marc Copland.
Tobias Meinhart, saxophone, has studied with Joe Lovano, Seamus Blake, and John Ellis. He has participated in major European Jazz Festivals and was voted into the European Next Generation Orchestra.
