The association between Lee Konitz and Trio Minsarah dates back quite some years. It started in Cologne, Germany where Lee lived for close to 20 years before returning to New York finally. He met this international trio of pianist Florian Weber from Cologne (Germany), bassist Jeff Denson from San Diego (USA) and drummer Ziv Ravitz from Tel Aviv (Israel) at concerts in Cologne and was immediately won over by them. The four of them worked on and off in both Europe and the U.S. and recorded their first quartet CD “Deep Lee” (ENJ-9517 2) in Brooklyn. Lee soon felt that he had found simply perfect and exciting partners for his music – partners that made him step out of his routine and take a fresh look at well known material he had improvised on all his life.
At the rehearsals for the Vanguard date which were held in his home on NY’s Upper Westside the practical joker announced: “Let’s do this quiz style. We start improvising immediately and give only tiny hints as to the melody we are actually playing on. The first in the audience to recognize the tune should raise his hand and we buy him a drink when he is right!” The audience loved it – it became such fun. A hard one was when Jeff began bowing an old Jewish traditional on which Lee had based his great composition "Kary’s Trance" which was quoted only at the very end of the performance.
Lee had played the Village Vanguard for the last time in 1983 before his hiatus to Europe. An indication how important the Village Vanguard engagement was for him is the fact that for this date he had his old alto saxophone from Tristano days (he hadn’t played it for many years) completely renovated and brought back into shape by his lifelong saxophone doctor in Chicago. Lee holds that this uncompromising, completely personal recording is a high point in his long career. He was so happy about the great “welcome home” the New York press and the enthusiastic audience at the Vanguard gave him.

Die Beziehung zwischen Lee Konitz und dem Trio Minsarah begann vor einigen Jahren in Köln, wo Lee fast 20 Jahre lang lebte, bevor er in die USA zurückging. Lee hat das internationale Trio des deutschen Pianisten Florian Weber, des US-Bassisten Jeff Denson und des israelischen Schlagzeugers Ziv Ravitz bei Konzerten gehört und war unmittelbar tief beeindruckt. Die vier begannen gemeinsam in Deutschland und vor allem den USA aufzutreten, die erste CD wurde im Systems Two Studio in Brooklyn aufgenommen (ENJ-9492 Deep Lee). Lee wusste schnell, dass er hervorragende, aufregende Partner gefunden hatte, die ihn das Material, über das er sein Leben lang improvisiert hatte, mit neuen Ohren hören ließen.
Für den Auftritt im Village Vanguard in New York – wohl mit Recht der berühmteste Jazz-Club der Welt – probte das Quartett in Lees Wohnung an der Upper Westside. Dabei meinte der mit viel trockenem Humor begabte Konitz: „Lasst es uns als Quiz angehen. Wir fangen sofort an zu improvisieren, spielen keine Melodie und geben nur kleine Hinweise auf den Titel. Wer im Publikum zuerst kapiert, worum es sich handelt, soll den Finger heben und wir kaufen ihm einen Drink in der Pause.“ Und so wurde es auch weitgehend gehalten – dem Publikum gefiel es. Dieses Konzept befreite Lee in von zu strengen harmonischen Regeln und er konntes seinen unendlichen Einfallsreichtum an Melodien voll ausbreiten. Schwierig wurde das Ratespiel fürs Publikum allerdings, als Jeff mit dem Bogen einen alten jüdischen Traditional strich: Darüber hatte Lee vor langer Zeit sein berühmtes Kary’s Trance geschrieben, das hier erst in den letzten Takten zitiert wird.
Lee hatte seinen letzten Auftritt im Vanguard im Jahr 1983, bevor er nach Europa ging. So wichtig waren ihm das neue Engagement und die Aufnahme, dass er nun sein Lieblingssaxophon aus Lennie-Tristano-Tagen, das er viele Jahre nicht mehr gespielt hatte, bei seinem alten sax doctor in Chicago gründlich überholen und in beste Form bringen ließ. Er betont, dass die Aufnahme mit Minsarah unbedingt ein Höhepunkt in seiner langen Karriere ist. Jahrzehntelang hatte er keine feste eigene Gruppe, dies aber sei nun das Lee Konitz New Quartet. Lee Konitz hat sich auch über das begeisterte „Welcome Home“ gefreut, das ihm die New Yorker Presse und das enthusiastische Publikum bereiteten. Am zweiten Abend des eine Woche dauernden Engagements brachte das Feuilleton der New York Times eine halbe Seite darüber.
